Where ancient runes hold civilization together — and war tears it apart.
Verath is a world of amber skies, warring kingdoms, and the slow decay of an empire that once spanned three continents. Its people have wielded runic magic for millennia — but black powder weapons are spreading from the eastern frontier, and no one yet knows whether the old ways will survive the collision. Two sapient species share the world: the dominant Verathen, and the near-extinct Lethrin, whose ancient empire preceded the current age by ten thousand years.

Beneath Verath's soil runs a network of leylines — channels of ambient energy that no instrument has ever fully mapped. The Lethrin discovered them first, carved their runes into the stone above each nexus, and built a civilization of breathtaking sophistication. When they collapsed — for reasons the Verathen still debate — the leylines remained. The Verathen found them, learned a cruder form of the old art, and called it their own. Now the empire built on that art is fracturing, and the black powder coming from the east cares nothing for the geometry of runes.
The earliest recorded age of Verath. The Lethrin species dominates all known continents, having developed agriculture, written language, and basic leyline manipulation. The proto-Verathen peoples are scattered, nomadic, and in early conflict with Lethrin territorial expansion.
The Lethrin Hegemony collapses over three centuries of internal war. Into the vacuum, the Verathen peoples — now iron-armed and organized — forge the first kingdoms. The Verathen Compact emerges as the dominant power. Lethrin populations retreat to the western highlands.
The current era. Black powder weapons — first developed in the eastern frontier states — are spreading across the Compact, threatening to upend centuries of military tradition built around runic warfare. The Compact's ruling council is divided: some see the new weapons as a tool of conquest; others as the beginning of the end for everything they know.

Runic Weaving — a hard magic system rooted in geometric inscriptions drawn along leyline nexuses. Practitioners must map the invisible lattice of energy beneath the earth and inscribe precise runes to channel it. A single misdrawn line breaks the pattern entirely.
