NGC 6822

Also known as Barnard's Galaxy, NGC 6822 was one of the first galaxies recognized as lying beyond the Milky Way. It is a barred irregular dwarf with active star formation and several prominent HII regions — glowing clouds of ionized gas lit by hot young stars. Its proximity makes it a key stepping stone in the cosmic distance ladder.
