A Magellanic-type dwarf irregular galaxy on the outskirts of the Local Group. NGC 3109 is gravitationally associated with the Antlia Dwarf and the Sextans galaxies, forming a loose chain of small galaxies at the Local Group's boundary. It shows active star formation despite its isolation.
