An isolated dwarf irregular galaxy that lies near Leo but is not believed to be gravitationally bound to the Milky Way. Leo A contains a significant reservoir of neutral hydrogen and has been forming stars slowly and intermittently for most of its life. It is one of the most gas-rich galaxies known for its size.
